Ashton under Lyne is in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside, in Greater Manchester, formerly in Lancashire, in the North West of England, UK.
It is situated about six miles or ten kilometres east of the centre of the City of Manchester.
It is at the junction of the A635 and A627 trunk roads and a mile east of Junction 23 of the M60 Manchester Orbital Motorway, which runs through the western fringe of Ashton. The town is clearly signposted along the eastern section of the M60.
Ashton under Lyne railway station is on the line between Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria. Manchester International Airport is about 15 miles away.
Ashton is served by local bus services from Manchester, Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale, Failsworth, Saddleworth, Glossop and from all parts of Tameside. It is also served by express services from London, Blackpool, etc.
