Ashton's open-air market
Ashton has had a market for over 700 years and was an important market centre for the surrounding area. This is still one of the attractions of the town, with its large Victorian Market Hall and open air market being open six days a week plus a monthly Farmers' Market.
The town developed into a major shopping venue for the area, with a range of local shops and national chain stores. Ashton Town Centre has a modern indoor shopping centre, "The Arcades", in addition to the well-established "Ladysmith Centre."
Stamford Street, the Victorian shopping area, has seen a decline in its fortunes in recent years, but now boasts a range of interesting specialist shops.
Close to the town centre is IKEA, a major international furniture and lifestyle store, which has opened its Manchester branch in Ashton for its ease of access from the motorway. Close to IKEA are Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer.
On the western boundary of Ashton is the large Snipe retail park with such multiple stores as Currys, Comet, MFI, Staples and B&Q Warehouse. The site was formerly the Ashton Moss Colliery, which, in 1882, was the deepest pit in the world.
